I am a voice-over artist.  What kind of advice can you offer?

Everybody's voice is different so it is critical that you choose material that suits your voice and will help you achieve your particular goals.  I can help you choose suitable material and, if required, offer production advice on pronunciation, emphasis, phrasing, intonation, etc.  Listen to some voice-over examples here.

I
f you are new to the industry and require more guidance then it might be worth enrolling on a voice-over course.  I run these in conjunction with Presenter Promotions, who are arguably the top company in the country offering this type of service.

I am a singer songwriter.  What king of advice can you offer?

Producing a recording of a song requires several skills.  The main ones being songwriter, singer, musician, producer and engineer.  I have experience in all of these roles (except singing but I know people that do!), so I can offer guidance in any areas that you may be lacking.

Lets assume that you have finished lyrics and melody.  At this stage the musical style and chord accompaniment needs to be decided on.  For any given melody there will be many chord progressions that will work.  Often though, the tempo and musical style of the piece will narrow down the options that work best.

Once the lyrics, melody chords and musical style have been decided on, the song's arrangement needs to be decided.  How long should the introduction be?  How many verses?  Is there a middle eight?  If so, where should it go?  Once these questions have been answered, the instrumentation of the song can be approached.  What instruments best suit the song?  Is it a keyboard based ballad or guitar based pop or rock song?  Once this has been decided the fun can begin!

If you play an instrument then great, however if not, I am an experienced guitarist and bass player and with the aid of technology I can produce extremely convincing keyboard parts.  Realistic drum parts can be programmed with the end result being what sounds like a complete band.    Have a listen here and try to tell which of these recordings used live drums and which were programmed.

If you want something a little more special such as a sax solo, or some backing vocals with a different voice, then we can always get in a session player to add it.  I know many singers and musicians that offer this service and can select someone depending on the style of music and your budget.

As the layers of instrumentation and vocals are built up, the song will gradually take shape until it is time for the mix.  All of the existing sounds will then be balanced and shaped so that they fit seamlessly together.  The final stage is the mastering phase when the finished mix is fine tuned before being burnt to CD.

Because everything is recorded digitally, any part of the song can be changed at any time.  It is like using a word processor to write a letter.  Paragraphs can easily be moved around
and small sections can be edited or deleted.  So days, months or even years later you can still return to the song to work on it further.
